Best Pond Filters of 2019 – Top 5 Products Revealed

I remember when my wife and I started to really get into gardening, we would often have clashing ideas when it comes to how the landscape of our garden should look.

However, there was one thing that we were both set on and that is to have a pond as the centerpiece of our garden. We just love how peaceful it makes our garden look. We also love taking care of fishes so this was also a great way to do so.

When we got the pond made, we didn't think that it would be too difficult to maintain. We initially thought that just cleaning it constantly would be enough but we soon realized that having a pond filter is a must.

Through the years we've had our fair share of hits and misses when it comes to the filters we have gotten. Some worked like a charm while others didn't even last that long. This trial and error allowed me to really know what to look for when choosing the best pond filters.

Best Pond Filters Today

Through my five years of gardening, I've purchased my fair share of pond filters. With the numerous filters I've tried I know which ones are heroes and which ones you should stay clear of. Below are the best pond filters on the market now.

This pond filter from tetrapond will keep the water in your pond clean and free from any bad particles. It also prevents clogging on your pump so you won't have to worry about it breaking due to unwanted particles.

This also features a filter foam which has a coarse and fine foam pads. These pads ensure that no matter the type of particle that might enter, the filter would still be able to keep it out.

What I like about this particular pond filter is that it doubles as a fountain. After the water has been cleaned it releases it upwards creating a fountain-like effect. This would be a great addition for people like me and my wife who have been going back and forth between having a fountain in our backyard or not.

This filter gives you a cheaper option and it also utilizes the space that you already have so no need to use up much needed floor space. This filter is also very flexible and can pretty much work for almost all small ponds.

It can filter ponds of up to 500 gallons. Others even claim that this works fine for their 900 gallon pond. This just shows how powerful and effective this pond filter really is.

However, it was quite disappointing for me that they only offer one year limited warranty. Items like this, which is often exposed to potentially harmful environmental agents. Usually get a bit worn out throughout the years so I was hoping that the warranty would've been longer.

Aside from this drawback, I also noticed that the external tab sometimes comes off when I take the filter out of the pond so some of the debris and sludge is poured back.

There are a lot of things that I like about the Laguna Flo-Clean. The number one thing being easy installation. A lot of pond filters require so many tools and so much time to install.

Oftentimes the instructions are vague making it hard to follow. This is a huge problem because you might end up making a mistake. So I was really happy that this wasn't the case for this pond filter. Installation was a breeze and it can even be added to filters that you already have.

Another great thing about this filter is that it is an all-in-one filter. You won't have to buy another filter because this does the job completely on its own. It is also very cost and time effective. It can filter up to 333 gallons per hour.

Its three step process also ensures that no type of particle would be brought back to your pond. This means that your water would always be clean.

This filter also features a patent-pending Backwash Cleaning. This innovation allows you to clean out your filter without having to remove the tab. So you won't have to worry about any residue accidentally falling to your pond which is the complaint of most people with the other filters.

Aside from this, it also has an easy view cleaning feature which makes cleaning easier and also allows you to see when you should clean out your filter.

Previous customers, like me, generally love this filter. They are impressed with the easy installation and cleaning that it features. But, the number one thing they love is how effective it is.

Do take note that some customers claim that it was hard for them to maintain pH levels at times with this filter.

This filter is a great fit for those who are more concerned about the biological part of their pond. As it is a biological filter, it removes any unwanted microorganisms in your pond.

This would ensure that your fish and other creatures there would always be healthy and would not be victim to accidental poisoning. This is also a great way to keep the toxins from fishes at bay.

I was really impressed with the capacity of this pond filter. It can filter small to medium ponds of up to 2500 gallons depending on the number of fish you have. It is also a great value for money since it does not have that hefty price tag but it's performance is in par with more premium filters.

Another great thing about this is that it already includes hose adaptors so you won't have to worry about your existing hose not fitting to the filter.

However, it is best to still note that this filter also has its faults. Some parts are hard, sometimes impossible, to find so replacing them is a huge headache. I also noticed that the instructions are a bit difficult to follow so it might be hard for beginners.

  • Product Dimensions: 22x17x17
  • Weight: 17.7 pounds
  • Capacity: 2500 gallons (normal fish) and 1500 gallons (heavy fish)

  • No problems with O rings
  • Good value for money

  • Some parts are not available to purchase so once it breaks you might need to dispose the filter entirely

If you're looking for something affordable but still does the job well then, this Best Choice Products pond filter is the one for you. I remember choosing this filter early on due to this particular reason.

It's perfect for beginners who want something that won't break the bank but is still very effective. This filter is best for those that have smaller ponds since it does not have a huge capacity which is understandable given its price point.

Even though it is quite cheap, it still has great features like the UV light indicator which signals when it's best to clean out the filter. Although it has these great features it is not without its faults. Since it is on the cheaper side, I noticed that the build is not as durable or as sturdy as I would want my filter to be.

This was also the observation of previous customers. The parts are also not available on Best Choice so if a part falls off or breaks you might need to get a new filter entirely since there's no way to replace the part.

  • Product Dimensions: 14 x 14 x 20 inches
  • Weight: 16 pounds
  • Capacity: 2500 Gal (normal fish) and 1500 Gal (heavy fish)
  • Designated for filtering normal pond water
  • Comes with an integrated 13W UV clarifier, a UV lamp indicator, inlet and outlet hose adapters

  • Great price point
  • Great filtration and UV light system
  • Easy to install (with care and a little time)
  • Easy to clean
  • Arrive in good shape

  • Not as durable as other premium brands
  • No replacement for a few parts
  • It may sleak. Make sure you get the rubber gasket on properly.
  • The instructions are vague

What are the Types of Pond Filters?

Most filtration systems have these three components: UV filter, mechanical, and biological filter. The UV filter takes care of the green water; the mechanical filter gets rid of any larger solid; and the biological filter keeps the levels of toxins from fish waste at bay.

Now, you might be asking why you need to know the different types of filters if you are only a hobbyist. In my experience, knowing the different types of pond filters gave me a better idea of which one is the right fit for me and for the type of pond that I have. Below I have listed down the different types of pond filters.

#1 Gravity Return Filter

This is probably the most popular type of filter and because of that, this is actually the first pump that my wife and I tried. It uses a pump which is submersible in the pond and pumps water to the filter system.

Then, the clean water would be returned to the pond as a waterfall or a small stream hence, the name “gravity return”.

#2 Pressured Filter

This a great type of filter if you have a smaller pond. This is similar to the gravity return filter. Water is again pumped in a small pipe and is released back to the pond once it is clean.

#3 Gravity Fed Filter

This type of filter is usually used by businesses or those with really big ponds. Because it has a complex system, you would usually need an expert to install it for you.

What to Look for in the Best Pond Filters?

Throughout the years that I have been gardening, I realized that knowing what to look for before you purchase is a huge lifesaver. This allows you to really look for the right product for you and your specific needs.

Taking into account the qualities below would reduce the risk of buyer’s regret and ensure that you have the best value for the price you’re paying.

1. Size

A pond filter is one of those items where going big is definitely better because a bigger filter would allow cleaning of more water more efficiently and faster. In addition, bigger filters would also allow you more modifications in the future.

On the other hand, while small filters might be logical for those that doesn’t want to give up precious floor space it cleans less water. Aside from this, it also doesn’t clean as efficiently since it is small so the machinery would need to work double to achieve the same effect as with a bigger one.

Big or small, choosing the right size for your pond still depends on the maximum gallons that it can fit. In other words, you have to check the capacity of your pond in order to get the most out of the filter that you’d get.

2. Warranty

Pond filters are exposed to various environmental agents which may cause it to deteriorate. In my experience, getting a filter which has warranty is a huge plus this would save you from lots of headaches and expenses.

The length of the warranty also matters because longer warranties actually indicate that the brand is confident enough in their product so they know that no one would have any problems with it.

3. Durability

No matter how great the warranty is if the filter is not durable it won’t make sense to purchase it. The durability of the filter doesn’t just rely on the main machinery but also on the small pieces connected to it.

The past filters I have used, often work well overall but there would be a valve, a tab, or even a pipe that would not perform well. This results to unclean water either spilling to the pond or in some cases reflux can even happen.

To know whether the filter is durable reading customer comments often help although you should also take into account the possibility that the filter they bought might only be a lemon.

4. Effectiveness

Last, but certainly not the least, you should check for the effectiveness of the filter. It should be able to keep the levels of toxins and other potentially harmful organisms at bay to keep the ecosystem in your pond alive and well.

Although my reviews would show you how effective a filter is, you can also check the reviews from previous customers on Amazon. All these would allow you to assess whether or not the brand is effective.

The Verdict

When getting your pond filter, you shouldn't just focus on a single aspect but instead look at its entirety. This is because the quality that is you didn't look I to lift be the thing that would make or break your decision and cause you to have buyer’s regret.

ln conclusion, I can say that that the Laguna Pressure Flo-Clean 2100 Pressurized Pond Filter is the best choice. Simply because it is easy to install, and it does the job efficiently.

I hope that the tips and tricks above helped you to choose the best pond filter for you and your garden. If you have any comments or you feel like I left out other great pond filters please comment them in the comments section below.
